Teacher - Roselind Gikunda
Boy - Eric Mutuma, in class 3
Age - 10 years

When his parents died, he went to live in the Makutano slums with his impoverished aunt. He used to roam around Makutano town. He is responding well to the new life at school.


Teacher - Ann Mwiti
Girl - Joy Gakii, in class 1
Age - 8 years

Joy was abandoned by her mother after the death of the father. The mother lives at Majengo slums. Joy lived among 4 other siblings left behind after the death of her father.


Teacher - Florence Mugambi
Boy - Lawrence Mwiti, in class 1
Age - 7 years

Mwiti's parents died and left him with his ailing and landless grandparents. He loves going to school. He would like to be a driver.


Teacher - Jane Mwongera
Girl - Elosy Kinya, in class 2
Age- 9 years

Elosy's parents died, leaving her with a sickly grandmother. To afford meals and other basic needs was difficult. This pushed her away from home to get food anywhere. She looks sickly but is improving.


Mary Kagwiria

Mary Kagwiria has seen a great deal of tragedy in her short life. She watched her father die of AIDS and then her mother became bedridden and very sick with the same illness, which has left this little girl with no one to care for her needs.

Elosy Kinya

After losing both parents to the AIDS scourge, Elosy Kinya, who was just 10, was left with her crippled grandmother, Rael Imathiu.
